Lepidocrocite iron mineralization in keratose sponge granules.
Reddish-brown granules embedded in the spongin fibers of some keratose sponges consist of very fine crystallites of poorly organized lepidocrocite, gamma FeOOH. This is the first occurrence of crystalline iron mineralization in the phylum Porifera and the first indication of hard tissue formation among the Keratosa.
متن کاملStromatolite branching in the Neoproterozoic of the Centralian Superbasin, Australia: an investigation into sedimentary and microbial control of stromatolite morphology.
The extensive and well-preserved Neoproterozoic Acaciella australica Stromatolite assemblage of Australia is ideal for examining the relative roles of microbial and environmental influences on stromatolite branching and stromatolite macrostructure across a wide geographical area. Detailed sedimentological analyses indicate that the basal hemispheroidal section of bioherms contains abundant sedi...
متن کاملA Sideways View of Stromatolites: Complexity Metrics for Stromatolite Laminae
Stromatolites offer a unique window into 3.5 billion years of evolution of the microbial communities that built them within the context of an evolving Earth. Our interest is not in the microbial life or their external matrix as independent entities, but the appearance and evolution of complexity itself within this biogeological system. We adopt the canonical definition of complexity as the emer...
متن کاملAggregation Phenomena in Cyanobacterial, Stromatolite Analogues
Earth’s biological history is largely the story of microbial evolution. If one is to understand the evolution of such fundamental processes as photosynthesis, it is imperative to recognize and interpret microbial fossils. To these ends, we examine the forces that shape a modern cyanobacterial mat from the hot springs of Yellowstone that is thought to grow in a manner similar to an ancient struc...
متن کاملA Classic Case of Maple Syrup Urine Disease and a Novel Mutation in the BCKDHA Gene
Background: Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is an inherited branched-chain amino acid metabolic disorder caused by the deficiency in the branched-chain alpha-keto acid dehydrogenase (BCKD) complex. In MSUD, elevation of the branched-chain amino acids, such as alpha-keto acid and alpha-hydroxy acid, occurs due to the BCKDC gene deficiency, appearing in the blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid,...
